Imagine sailing across the sea and seeing this church in the Biblical town of Joppa “Joffa, Tel-Aviv” on the horizon. As a beacon of the sea port city, this church still greets travelers and pilgrims as it serves as reminder that one is close to the Holy City of Jerusalem.

This church marks the place from the story in the Book of Acts where a disciple named Tabitha drew sick and died. Tabitha’s Greek name was “Dorcus” and she was described as a good person who was noted for helping the poor.

Upon her death Peter was beckoned to come to Joppa and to go to the home where her body was laid.

As Peter stood at her bedside, with several widows in mourning gathered around, Peter had them step out of the room while he bowed to his knees and prayed.

As he was praying, Peter instructed her to get up. She did!

Friends, dead people don’t just rise (unless it’s Jesus or the power of Jesus’ authority is the one doing the commanding).

Peter’s raising of Tabitha led many to a believing faith in Jesus Christ (Acts 9:41-42).

That’s the purpose of this story! To remind us all of God’s great power in healing!

May the power of God heal you from your illnesses, your weaknesses in life and all your struggles.
