Worry Warts Unite

May 13, 2020 By: Kyle Timmons Topic: Uncategorized Scripture: Philippians 4:6-7, Matthew 8:19-31

I don’t know if I’ve ever met a person who hasn’t worried.

In fact, some of the most responded to sermons I’ve ever given have come after talking about how to deal with worry and anxiety.

Worriers come in all shapes and sizes, and with that, are some who worry so much that they often find themselves physically sick because they are consumed with worry.

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

Philippians 4:6-7

In Matthew 8, within the context of about two dozen verses, we find three quick examples of people worrying.

There were people who were worried about completing the mundane tasks of life before their allegiance to following Christ (vs. 19-22), some worried about their physical life and safety from the problems around them, in this case a storm (vs. 23-27), and some who were worried about what Jesus was going to do to them (vs. 28-31).

It’s no surprise that we are people who struggle with worry.  Why?  I think it’s because we realize that in the end there is nothing we can do to control the results of what life throws at us.

In Matthew’s passage, Jesus taught his followers to “follow Me” and let the things of this world take care of themselves.  He taught to “not be afraid” and to trust in His power that He cares for us.

Easier said than done, right?

If you find yourself drowning in worry; how are you going to pay the bills, will you ever be able to find a job, does your loved one love you in return, how will I provide food for my family tomorrow, and other concerning anxieties in your life, I simply encourage you to silence yourself before the presence of God and ask Him to carry your burdens.

Rest easy in knowing that He’s got you in the palm of His hands.  He loves you and He cares for you.
