Celebrating Women (5) – “Mary”

As we come to an end of honoring the women of the Bible and find ourselves just a few days from celebrating our own women on Mother’s Day, we continue to praise God for the faithful of the past and present.

Throughout the Word of God women played a significant role in society despite what many believe was a culture of suppression.

The influences women had on their spouses and their families, the decisions they made while trying to remain obedient to God, and the relationships they had with others had, and still have, significant impacts on the way our world is today.

From Eve to Sarah, to women like Rahab and Ruth, Naomi and Esther, to Mary the mother of Jesus.  We can celebrate the lives of the women of faith, whether mothers or not, as we thank God for the role women play in our lives.

Today, we celebrate a woman of favor, Jesus’ mother, Mary.

It should come as no surprise that Mary is one of the honored women of all-time.

A young woman, pledged to be married to Joseph, Mary trusted God that even though she was a virgin, that she had conceived the very Son of God.

In all her fears, with all her questions, Mary’s faith was unshaken.

After an encounter with an angel who told her what was going to take place, Mary responded with some very faithful words.

“I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered.  “May your word to me be fulfilled.” (Luke 1:38).

With God’s favor upon her she followed God’s plan and traveled with Joseph and gave birth in Bethlehem to the baby Jesus.

She continued to be obedient to God as Jesus grew by taking Him as an infant to the temple and presenting Him as a child to God.  If the law required it, she obeyed (Luke 2:22).

Years later, Mary witnessed the miracles of Jesus and continued to display her motherly love even as she watched her Son die on a cross – not just for the whole world, but also for her!

What a joy it must be to know God’s favor is upon you.

May God’s favor be upon all His children that you may experience the true peace, love, and hope of a life in Jesus.
