Celebrating Women (2) – “Rahab”

Yesterday we began a week long series of devotionals honoring women as Mother’s Day quickly approaches this Sunday.

Throughout the Word of God women played a significant role in society despite what many believe was a culture of suppression.

The influences women had on their spouses and their families, the decisions they made while trying to remain obedient to God, and the relationships they had with others had, and still have, significant impacts on the way our world is today.

From Eve to Sarah, to women like Rahab and Ruth, Naomi and Esther, to Mary the mother of Jesus.  We can celebrate the lives of the women of faith, whether mothers or not, as we thank God for the role women play in our lives.

Today, we celebrate a woman of great faith.

Her name was Rahab.  While I’m confident that we could find millions of women throughout time who fit this characteristic, Rahab’s situation was a little unique.

Usually, when honoring a woman for their faith-like characteristics, we think of women who had a lot of Godly characteristics; however, Rahab was a prostitute.

She was disobedient to God in her lifestyle; yet, she was used by God to exhibit faith.

In Hebrews 11:31 Rahab is listed among the Heroes of Faith in the chapter of the Bible that provides a list of Biblical Goats (Greatest of All Time) when it comes to showing Godly faith.

“By faith, Rahab, the prostitute, because she welcomed the spies, was not killed with those who were disobedient.” – Hebrews 11:31

Even in the book of James she is listed as righteous because she saved the spies (which reminds that despite her sinful nature she eventually believe God and found everlasting life) – God can, and does, save the vilest sinner.

To all the women who don’t feel qualified, to all the women who feel like they are undeserving, for all the women who feel like they can’t be loved – look at Rahab.

Remember, God’s love is greater than anything you have ever done.
